FLORIDA COMMERCIAL SOLAR · GUIDEFlorida Commercial Battery Peak Shaving & Demand Charges
A battery can be evaluated for peak control, but its value depends on when your account sets billed demand and how the system can operate.
A monthly bill is only the beginning
The bill identifies demand charges and tariff codes. Interval data is normally needed to simulate when peaks occur. Obtain the utility’s measurement interval and any ratchet or minimum provisions before estimating savings.
Power and duration are separate
Battery kW limits how much demand can be reduced at once. Usable kWh and reserve requirements constrain how long reduction can last. Account for efficiency, degradation, recharge energy and equipment cycling when testing a dispatch strategy.
Avoid double counting
Do not add a percentage of the total bill as battery savings while also treating all of that bill as solar energy savings. Use distinct energy, demand and fixed-cost buckets. Include incremental storage cost and future replacement obligations in its case.
Request the right comparison
Ask for solar-only and solar-plus-storage cash flows using the same baseline. Keep demand savings at zero in the public estimate until an interval study supports a project-specific assumption. Backup reserve value should remain separate from ordinary bill savings.

Demonstration assumptions: 12 W per usable sq ft; 1.5% annual maintenance; 0.5% annual degradation; 2% annual energy/maintenance escalation. No applied credit, depreciation, demand reduction, replacement cost or export revenue. A reviewed report must include project-specific replacements and tax timing.
- Illustrative system size
- 198.0 kW DC
- Year-1 tax benefits applied
- $0
- 25-year cash NPV at 8%
- -$239,620
- Cumulative cash payback
- 20.3 years
Model assumptions & honest limits
- Illustrative cash-ownership model; not a tariff simulation or engineering proposal.
- All cost, yield and escalation defaults are demonstration assumptions, not sourced market quotes.
- Fixed charges, financing, property-tax savings and storage are excluded.
- Net operating savings are reduced by the entered effective tax rate; tax capacity and deductibility require review.
- Annual usage inferred from assumed energy-only share of spend; replace with bills.
- Export value is zero until applicable utility terms are confirmed.
- Tax benefits are zero until a project-specific schedule is confirmed.
Tax benefits start at zero pending project review. This estimate is not a quote, tariff simulation or guaranteed return.
