Illustrative scenario—not a quote or verified result
Gross project sensitivity$514,250–$695,750±15% cost scenario, not a confidence interval
Potential ownership credit sensitivity$36,300–$181,5006%–30% rate scenarios; eligibility and qualified basis required
Annual net savings sensitivity$34,266–$51,399±20% operating scenario before financing and tax
01 / POTENTIAL TAX BENEFITS

Keep more capital in Year 1.

$0

Showing $0 because eligibility is unconfirmed. Confirm it in “Adjust my financial assumptions” to see a scenario — a real result needs your tax adviser.

Why this starts at $0 — and what changes it
The model never assumes you qualify. When you and your tax adviser confirm eligibility and usable tax capacity, the scenario applies the credit and deduction rates below. The adviser — not this site — confirms rates, timing, qualified basis and recapture.
02 / DEMAND-CHARGE REDUCTION

Target expensive power peaks.

$10,800 / year

Battery savings scenario. Confirm tariff and interval load.

How demand savings differ from energy savings
Energy savings come from using less grid electricity overall (kWh). Demand savings come from cutting your single highest power draw (kW) in the billing window — batteries can flatten those peaks. Utilities measure demand differently, so your tariff and interval data decide the real number.
03 / OWNERSHIP & FINANCING

Compare ownership with financing.

$42,833 / year

Operating savings before tax and upfront system cost.

Operating savings vs cash flow after financing
Operating savings are what the system saves before any financing payment. Cash flow subtracts what you actually pay. A financed or PPA project can have positive cash flow while transferring more of the long-term benefit to the financier — the comparison shows the trade-off.
04 / PAYBACK & LONG-TERM RETURNS

See when the numbers turn.

17.9 years

Your payback follows your property, utility tariff, project cost and eligibility — enter your real numbers for a meaningful result.

Which assumptions determine payback
After-tax payback uses modeled operating savings, usable first-year tax benefits (ownership paths) and the entered cost. It is a simple payback, not an IRR, and doesn't model degradation, escalation or replacements. Every input is adjustable below — change nothing to inflate the result; we don't.

Property-value sensitivity applies when the owner pays the utility.

Reading these numbers — plain-English guide
  • Why tax benefits show $0 at first: this model never assumes you qualify. Tax benefits only appear once the eligibility boxes below are checked as a scenario — and a real result requires your tax adviser to confirm eligibility, timing and tax capacity.
  • What drives payback: your actual bills, the project cost entered, how much solar energy is used onsite, demand-charge savings, and usable tax benefits on an ownership path.
  • Operating savings vs cash flow: operating savings ignore financing payments; cash flow includes them. A low monthly payment can look attractive while extending total cost.
  • Demand vs energy savings: energy savings reduce total kWh purchased; demand savings reduce billed peak kW. Batteries target the second, and your utility's measurement method decides how much is recoverable.
  • Ownership vs PPA tax treatment: on a PPA you buy power; the system owner claims the tax benefits and prices them into the rate. Ownership paths keep those benefits with you if you qualify — never both.
Adjust my financial assumptions

These assumptions are editable and illustrative — we do not change them to produce attractive payback numbers. Solar and battery qualified tax bases may differ. Financing figures require a quote; a zero payment entry is not a financing offer. Residential tax rules are separate.

Illustrative financial rules reference the U.S. clean electricity investment credit framework (IRC Section 48E). Rules, bonuses and eligibility change frequently; a qualified tax adviser must confirm eligibility for your project.

COMMERCIAL SOLAR FAQ

Answers describe confirmed services. Anything project-specific is confirmed during your assessment.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

After you upload, here's the process.

What you receive
A personalized review built from your bill and calculator inputs — usage summary, energy vs demand charges, preliminary sizing, potential benefits and a payback summary, with assumptions disclosed.
Who reviews it
The Solar Black Belt project team. Your files, calculator inputs and property details stay together in one private project record with a reference number.
How results are delivered
We review your submission manually and follow up by phone or email. There is no automated bill analysis — anything unreadable or missing in your bills is flagged for you, not guessed.
What may be needed next
Up to 12 monthly bills, a utility interval-data export for demand analysis, and your tax adviser's confirmation for any incentive scenario.
Response time
We'll confirm the next steps and review timeline after receiving your bill.

How do you size a commercial solar system?

Sizing starts with usage: 12 months of bills, energy charges, demand charges and your tariff. Available roof or land sets an upper bound, but utility data and interconnection limits usually shape the final design. Try the calculator with your bill total, then request an assessment to confirm assumptions.

Does my roof need to be replaced first?

Roof condition matters more than age alone. A roof review checks remaining life, structure and drainage; if roof work is needed, coordinating it with the solar project avoids removing and reinstalling panels later. See the roofing service page.

I lease the building. Can I still go solar?

Often yes, but permission and terms depend on your lease. Select “Tenant” in the audit form and the review will include the authorization questions your landlord conversation needs.

Cash purchase, financing or a PPA — which is right?

Ownership keeps tax benefits and long-term savings with you; financing spreads cost over time; a PPA buys the power instead of the system and leaves ownership incentives with the system owner. The calculator compares the three paths — financing figures need an actual offer.

What incentive eligibility applies to my project?

Investment-credit rules (IRC Section 48E), domestic-content bonuses and foreign-entity rules change frequently and depend on timing, basis and tax capacity. We model scenarios; your tax adviser must confirm eligibility. Current reference: IRS Clean Electricity Investment Credit (reviewed October 2026).

Can batteries reduce my demand charges?

Sometimes. Savings depend on how your utility measures demand (15-minute vs monthly), ratchets, time-of-use periods and the battery's usable power and energy. See the Demand Control pillar in the calculator, then upload bills for a tariff-specific review.

How disruptive is installation?

Most rooftop work proceeds in phases around your operating schedule. Roof penetration, electrical work and inspections are coordinated in advance; your assessment will map the sequence before anything is scheduled.

What is utility interconnection and why does it take time?

Interconnection is your utility's review and permission to connect the system. Applications, studies and witness testing can take weeks to months depending on system size and utility queue — the assessment will include the expected steps for your project.

Who maintains the system and what warranties exist?

Monitoring, cleaning and service keep production on track. Equipment warranties come from manufacturers; workmanship warranty terms will be documented with your proposal — see About for confirmed credential and warranty details.

Will solar power my building during an outage?

Standard grid-connected systems shut down during outages for safety. Backup requires batteries and a compatible electrical configuration sized for the loads that matter. See the storage section or ask about a commercial storage review.

How long does a project take from assessment to operation?

Timelines depend on design, permitting, interconnection and scheduling. After your bill review, you'll receive the expected sequence and milestones for your property — we confirm timing rather than promise dates.

What do you need from me to start?

A recent electric bill (PDF, or a clear photo of it), your property address and the roof or land details you know. Upload 1–12 bills in the audit form — account and payment numbers can be redacted.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Commercial solar, honestly.

Project availability is confirmed during your assessment.

What determines the right system size?

Available roof or land is only the start. Interval usage, utility tariffs, ownership and interconnection limits shape the design.

How do I start?

Try the question above and request an assessment — your answer, context and any concept you built come with the request. Or call 310-881-5155.

Are savings guaranteed?

No. Estimates are scenario arithmetic from your inputs and public assumptions. Any tax incentive needs a separate eligibility review by your adviser.
